Wellington Feb.22nd 1868 My dear Maclean I have had some talk with Bishop the Manager of the N. Z.S. N.Co. about the use of the "Storm Bird" for the East Coast. He has made me an offer to put the boat at your disposal for a fortnight for the sum of £350. This is a heavy price but if we wait for better terms we may never get the work done so unless you have arranged otherwise with Col.Haultain I think you had best close with the offer and get the matter disposed of one way or another. You will see that Rolleston found the prisoners at Wharekauri in a better frame of mind than the sample. In simple truth our Wellington "friendlies" are many of them as unsatisfactory a lot as the island contains. There are threats I am sorry to say of a tribal quarrel about land in which the Whanganuis are concerned. I have not had the letters yet. Wishing you success in your negotiations I remain, dear Maclean Ever truly yours J.C. Richmond His Honor D.Maclean Napier
