Letter from John Rogan to Donald McLean Esq. dated 7th. April 1856. Whangaroa 7th. April 1856. My dear Sir, I send a reply to Ruihana's application. The natives here are vexed with him for seeking money at Auckland; as he was considered by them in the first instance. The Tainui party want all the money for Motukokako; and you will find not only Ruihana, but Pototau and his people claiming payment for this place. No offer has been made for this land, as I am waiting to hear from you on the subject of this and other land in the district, McInnes is again in difficulties with the natives. He took up his abode with Hetaraka, next door to myself, and remained very quiet for a few days. He has, however, commenced his old tricks with the girls; and differed so seriously with them last night and this morning that they bundled his traps out of doors. He is now back with me again; but how long he will remain here it is difficult to say. The great question here, is Kawhia; and I am glad, whatever may occur in that place, that we are perfectly free from interference in any way. You have paid no money for land; and I have not surveyed any. It will, therefore, he difficult to trace the "he" to us. Waikato talk of assembling in a body at Auckland to sell some of Kawhia; but they don't expect to succeed; and after that, the difficulty, if any, will arise between themselves. The natives here are busy with their Huis. I have not yet finished the survey of Motukokako; but a very short time will finish that matter. Hoping to hear from you soon, I remain, my dear Sir, yours faithfully (Signed) J. Rogan. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
