Letter from Lieutenant Governor Eyre, to D. McLean Esq. dated 7th. May 1848. Government House Wellington, 7th. May 1848. My dear Sir, I have just learnt that the Government Brig has made three unsuccessful attempts to reach you at Whanganui, with specie on board, and passengers; and as she has suffered much damage, I have been obliged to direct her immediate return to Wellington, to land both, prior to going on to Nelson and Auckland. I now write to state that if the Brig does not succeed in reaching you on her present trip, (having failed three times) I will take some other means for getting the money sent to you; so that you must not give up the case as hopeless. I hear the Ngatiawas have got no further than Ohau; and as there is little probability of their getting on more rapidly from thence, you will, I imagine, have plenty of time, and be able to adjust, I hope, this long pending question, in a satisfactory manner. You may rely upon my getting the money sent in some way or other, with the least possible delay. But if you could borrow it temporarily, it would facilitate matters. Pray write and let me hear fully of your proceedings; and the prospects you have of settling this question. Should the Brig have succeeded in reaching Whanganui, and be still there, you had better not send despatches by her, but rather overland; as she will not return further than Kapiti. Yours faithfully (Signed) G. Eyre. To:- Donald McLean.
