Ashcott 21st. November 1868 My dear McLean, Reports are rife here, that the Hau Haus are coming through the 70 Mile Bush, from Wairarapa, or West Coast. The natives at Te Ka Kini Pah alarm. Mrs. A'Deane is in a great state of alarm, and goes to bed every night with the expectation of a visit from these fanatics to murder her children. Although not an alarmist, I considered that all possible precautions should be taken, and trust that in looking after the Front, you have not forgotten the Rear. I shall be glad to hear whether you have heard the report to which I have alluded. I would suggest that some arrangement should be made by which the inhabitants in this neighbourhood should get some warning of a nature if danger approaches; so that they may be able to place their and in , and prepare themselves to fight.
