Napier February 13th. /67 My dear McLean, My last note by the previous mail will have apprised you of our monetary affairs. I hope you will be able to get the Customs due us, forwarded by next steamer to Caohpool, for our Bank account is now £9700 overdrawn. The sale to-morrow of the Hikatoto will no doubt help to reduce this amount, I hear there is likely to be spirited competition for this land. I am now putting up the Pukaha for sale on the 16th. April. I have not paid the duty of 10 per cent on this Block, hoping that we shall be able to avoid it - perhaps you will be able to have these duties under the Native Lands Act 1865 made exceptional in such cases of the Pukaha and other blocks. Wilson brought the case of Pukaha before the Judge, but it failed. I hope you will be more successful with the Attorney -General. I fear we shall not be able to carry on much longer without obtaining some portion of the Loan, for we have to provide £2686 by April for the Immigrants by the Montmorency and about £1000 for the erection of the Ngarororo Bridge. All sources of revenue ad interim are pretty well anticipated and more, by the state of our a/c at the Bank now to come. Believe me Yours very truly, J. C. Lambton Carter. P.S. Will you enquire about the Balce. Land Purchase sixths in hands of J. J. I wrote to you about in my last note - at all events if it is absorbed by payments on any of our Provl. a/c we ought to have a statement of its expenditure.
