Memo, from G. Eyre, to Mr. Domett, dated 20th. October 1849, The Lieut. Governor, to write Mr. McLean requesting reply to former letters. Mr. Domett, Will you be good enough to write again to Mr. McLean , - stating that you have written several letters to him, but suppose them to have miscarried, as no reply has been received; that the Government are most anxious that he should return and resume his negotiations; and that the New Zealand Company's Agent has made repeated enquiries on the subject, being equally desirous, with the Government, that no unnecessary delay should take place in carrying on those important arrangements; whilst the Government are unable to give him any information whatever, being quite ignorant of the cause or of the necessity of Mr. McLean's remaining so long at Taranaki. It is now full ten weeks since Mr. McLean left the Manawatu, on a Mission which the Government supposed would only have occupied If Mr. McLean is unable to return, or has received any instructions from Auckland directing him to remain at Taranaki, he should at least have acquainted this Government with the circumstances; as. they are unable to account in any way for his long detention, and have left all their arrangements in abeyance, in expectation of his immediate return. (Signed) G. Eyre. 20th. October 1849. This should be directed to Taranaki, by Overland Mail on Monday the 22nd, October. Mr. McLean, accordingly, on 22nd. Oct. 1849.
