Pohui Jany. 2nd 1867 My Dear Sir, Not being able to find out from Te Whetu at Tarawera whether the natives had realy started from Taupo for Napier or not - I rode on to within three hours march of the South western shore of the lake to a small pa belonging to the chief Paora Huremaka - I found that most of the Taupo chiefs were at Tokano. They had gone to see Sir G. Grey who is there - The natives told me that Sir George had altered his mind about coming to Napier and that after visiting Tongariro he was going on to Whanganui - This was the reason they gave for not starting before from Napier - but they will come immediately after Sir George's departure from Taupo - Te Whetu is now staying at Tarawera and has with him about fifteen or twenty men and some fifty women and children - he is waiting for the arrival of the natives en route for Napier - I remain yrs. very obed. ly. Jno. St. George.
