Letter from H. Halse to Donald McLean Esq. dated 17th. November 1855. New Plymouth November 17th. 1855. My dear Sir, I have nothing to report this week, in reference to the Native question. Mahau called yesterday, and asked permission to keep the letter you lent him on the 20th. ultimo, until an opportunity offered for reading it at an assemblage of natives, at present opposed to the sale of land. His object appears to be to draw them away from Katatore, in order that Karipa's offer may be carried, and so put an end to further hostilities. A rumour is in circulation that Ngatiruanui natives are again on their way to this Province, to attack Ihaia, and assist Katatore against Arama Karaka. The Southern postman came in yesterday, but knew nothing whatever about the report. It seems, therefore almost idle to talk about it. The Hua natives are in Town trading as usual. Faithfully yours H. Halse. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
