Dear McLean, Is there any chance for John White? F.D.B. Native office, 12 Sept. 1872. Dear Mr. Bell, I sent a telegram to you yesterday about myself. Can you do any thing for me with Mr. Stafford. I am in the Native office here but have no appointment. I draw my salary from contingent funds of vote 52, so you see I may be cast away in an hour and also am made to help Fentons N.L. Court for White and get no pay. As Mr. Clarke the Civil Commissioner of Auckland is always at Tauranga can you obtain for me the office of head of the Native office under the official agent in Auckland. Kemp is now acting but as he has been paid for his long service and I have not I think I am entitled to the office. I can not live on the £200 I now get and in fact I can not send one of my 7 children to school. I do feel that the Government have not acted towards me as they ought. I was induced to take the office I now hold and give up a good agency thinking the place was a appointment now I find it is not and my 20 years service really ought with my Native knowledge to count for something. Do all you can for me and oblige yours sincerely John White.
