Mangaraka 26th March 1846 My dear Sir, I feel greatly obliged by the trouble you have given yourself in sending to allay the apprehensions under which you very justly suppose we must have been from hearing of the reports respecting Katatori which had been related to us with such Maori circumstantiality that made us fear there was too much reason to suppose there was some foundation for them. It is certainly very gratifying to find the native population at any time not acting so badly as we had reason to suspect but prudence must oblige us to watch them carefully until we have the power to prevent their injuring either themselves or any of the White population. Excuse the haste in which I write but I do not like to detain your lad. Our family all desire their kind regards and thanks for your kind consideration for their ease of mind. I am, My dear Sir Yrs. very sincerely Josiah Flight . D. McLean Esqre.
