Waipawa, 19 October, 1865 My dear Sir, I have acted upon your suggestion and have forwarded two or three articles to Mr. Wood for insertion in the "Herald". I by no means dread the criticisms of the literati of Napier, although I cannot pretend to any journalistic reputation, or boast of having put my subject with any remarkable force of illustration or power of reasoning. I chiefly desire to awaken attention to the matter and I doubt not that the evils and their proposed remedies of the present state of education will be stated with a lucidity and perspecuity beyond that of which I am capable. If I succeed in infusing a little warmth and enthusiasm into the feelings of men whose position would lend influence to the work, I shall not fail in the object I proposed to achieve. The preliminary article appeared in Tuesday's impression, and will be followed by others in at least two consecutive issues. I shall endeavour to guard against themischief of surfeiting the public with the theme or of exposure to ridicule by thrusting my unsolicited recommendations of reform too freely upon the people of a country where as yet I am almost an alien. I shall be glad to learn if my attempt will be at any time worth repeating. I am, My Dear Sir, Yours very truly, Henry Godwin His Honor D. McLean Esq. Napier
