Whanganui May 13th. 1850. Sir, I have the honour to acquaint you, for the information of His Excellency, the Lieut. Governor, that I left Taranaki for this district on the 2nd. inst. I was induced to cross the country to the upper Whanganui, by way of Waitara and the Taumatanahoe ranges, from having to enquire into some native claims, and adjust disputes that were pending between a party of the Waitara and Ngatiruru natives of Whanganui. At Parikino I met Te Heu Heu, whom I was most anxious to see before his return to Taupo; as I was informed that he, Rangihaeata and Taratoa and been making some objections to the interior boundary of the Rangitikei purchase, and that a post had been put up in their name by a native named Panapa, to indicate that opposition would be offered to an extension of the boundary beyond that spot. I requested Te Heu Heu to return with me to Whanganui, that I might, in the presence of the Chiefs and assessors at this settlement, have an explanation from him for such proceedings. He accordingly did so; and at a Meeting held with him this forenoon, he promised to forgo all opposition, declaring at the same time that his anger was against the Ngatiapa tribe, who cursed him; and that he had no intention of interfering with the Europeans. He also states that after he returns from a visit to the Governor-in-Chief, at Auckland, he will, if necessary, come to the Rangitikei, and assist in definitely laying down an interior boundary. In the course of a day or two, when I have seen the Whanganui, Wangaehu, and Turakina claimants, I shall proceed to Rangitikei, and enquire into any differences that may exist there, making the necessary arrangements for paying the second instalment of purchase money, which falls due on the 15th. inst.
