Whangarei, Feb. 1st. 1861. My dear Sir, The Petrel sails for Auckland tonight, but acting on your limit of absence, I shall defer my return for the ''Maris''. I learn she is halfway up the river. She will sail probably about Monday or Tuesday and this will take me back within the specified time. I have only just returned from the Wairoa after a very pleasant trip. Mr. Richmond arrived at Kaihu en route for Hokianga on Wednesday last. Te Tirarau is at present, and expresses much anxiety about the settlement of his land question. Mr. Walton (whom I saw this afternoon) says that this negotiation will be a very easy one. He says that he has posted to your address places and full particulars. After this recruit I shall be prepared for a thorough campaign of work - any amount you like to impose for the next 12 months. I am (in haste), Faithfully yours, Walter Buller.
