Auckland 11th. November 1869 My dear Mr. Maclean, As I told the Governor, a few days back, I have been long wishing to have an opportunity of conferring with you on come Native matters, but as I knew you to be very busy, and as my business was not very pressing, I thought it better to wait. When you have lsisure, I shall be glad to call on you at such time and place as may suit you. To-day I write, because I wish to lose no time in expressing my thankfulness for the news brought by the telegram of this morning, and my earnest hope that this good beginning may be followed in due time by a complete success. If it be reserved for you to be the chief agent in pacifying this distracted country, you will be entitled to the gratitude of both races, and will hold a position than which, as a public man, you can not aspire to a nobler. I am, my dear Mr. Maclean, very truly yours, (Signed) Wm. Martin.
