Auckland July 23 1870 My dear Mr. McLean, I yesterday sent you some letters from Tuhoro and Mohi Te Rongomau. The former complaining of a muru which had taken place between Alexandra and Te Kuiti. Now this is the second affair of the sort and shows strongly the determination of the hauhaus to keep up their isolation. Tuhoro is building a large house and he is going to have a sort of housewarming at which all the Chiefs are to be invited. After consulting Dr. Pollen I authorized his getting some flour Rum and sugar in accordance with his request. He is going to bring up the question of these murus, and discuss the matter thoroughly with a view to the suppression of such lawlessness. It appears to me that the leaders of the King Party have very little control over their people and I am very much afraid that we shall have trouble in consequence. Mohi Te Rongomau writes to tell me that the ''kupapas'' have been over to Kawhia to reason with the Hauhaus about the Aotea ''muru'' and that they are unreasonable. They threaten that evil is coming Mohi proposes and speaks as if the friendlies had made up their mind to it to establish an ''Aukate'' against the hauhaus bring their produce into aglan. Of course this would most certainly bring about a collision. I have written strongly to Mohi and told him not to do anything of the sort. The Telegraph poles are all up as far as Shorthand the wire will be stretched by Monday or Tuesday. Mainwaring has been a great help and has softened Pineahas opposition. Taiparis great flourish ended in smoke and he came alone to witness the completion of the line. The hauhaus were all about the place but did not in any way impede the work. The Piako people do not speak well of Puckey. I am afraid he has not much energy for out door work. If I can get away next week or the week after I shall go up the Waikato. I have to see about the Tamahere awards to Natives. Very faithfully yours, Henry T. Clarke.
