Rangitikei 30th. July 1850. Sir, Referring to your letter of the 3rd. inst. respecting the suspension of the New Zealand Company's land purchasing operations, and desiring me to report on the probability of being shortly able to negotiate the Manawatu and Wairarapa purchases, I have to state that in accordance with the arrangements which it will be found necessary to carry out, in reference to these purchases, that it will be advisable to visit Ahuriri, where some of the principal Chiefs concerned in the sale of the districts alluded to are residing, before furnishing the report called for. I may, at the same time, add that when my duties in this part of the district are completed, I shall be ready either to return to Taranaki, or proceed to Ahuriri, as His Excellency, the Lieut. Governor, may be pleased to direct. I have the honour to remain Sir, Your most obedient servant (Signed) Donald McLean Land Commissioner. To:- The Honourable The Colonial Secretary.
