Wairoa 5 April 1865 My dear McLean, I send this mail the tracings of the Wairoa Township to the Survey office and to yourself an official. The Survey office is nearly built which will be one advantage to the Government work, if used in time to come for store house for tools etc. I will proceed to Long Point for the purpose of sounding the Awharangi and sending in a chart which I think will be of much advantage in the selling of the land both here and at Mahia, you have not sent the long letter promised indeed I did not half expect it. This employment being only temporary I cannot afford to remain at the pay mentioned in your official letter, the remaining here with the chance of losing any other kind of work which no doubt other persons would get while I have no permanent employment ought not to be expected from me, and if the Executive do not think it worth while to increase my pay to say £1.7.0 per day Sundays included, I will make everything straight here and give the work up. Believe me, Yours truly, M. Fitzgerald.
