Kaipara 24 Octr. /70 My dear Sir, I wrote to you from Mount Albert a few days ago and as I am writing a letter of thanks officially for the Poverty Bay a/cs I may as well say I am very grateful for this mark of your favorable consideration. I have seen no natives yet. Have received a very friendly letter from old Tirarau asking about the next sitting of the Court, another from on the same subject - One from Keene about the proposed line of railway and several others who have all been squabbling about bounds. and one petty thing or another all of which is to be squared up when Rogan comes home. I am here and the natives are employed better than in law by planting their potatoes I shall soon have to go back to P. Bay and perhaps I may get a line from you there - We have had no rain here for months - I am afraid our Cattle will die for want of food. My trip to Napier has made me quite disappointed with all Kaipara when I look at my barren hills without a blade of grass I become hopeless of getting out of this place without a heavy loss - I should like to know how this year's clip will turn out with you at Maraekakaho - I have really no news to communicate everything here is quite dull, heavy, and unprofitable. I am, My dear Sir, Yours very truly, J. Rogan. The Hon.D.McLean Wellington
