Wellington 7th. Decr. 1872. Dear Sir, Since my last note nothing has occurred of particular moment except the recovery of the missing boat of the Neweastle with the persons all safe. The exuberance of poor Fox's joy was almost too much for him but he was calmer when I last saw him. The work in the Native Office has gone on most satisfactorily. The whole of the arrears are worked up, with the exception of proper filing of papers, indexing Registers etc. which is being continued and when completed will make the office what it ought to be - and papers no matter of what date will then always be available when required. I have been much struck in going over the Native papers, with the importance of the work of the department which importance is I believe, taking it altogether greater than that of any other department in the Government. Mr. Halse. will I suppose be here in a day or two, also Mr. Young, when asking Mr. Cooper how on Mr. Halse's return I was to deal with the papers, he remarked, I suppose then we shall have to dispense with your services. I mention this to show the position of the two offices and the difficulty which perhaps may arise in my carrying out your wishes, Mr. Cooper has repeatedly expressed his satisfaction at the present arrangement and at the way the work goes through. Mr. Gill I know heartily concurs in it and it has enabled him to keep the accounts well up. But I should imagine that Mr. Cooper is ignorant of your views as expressed in your telegrams to me which of course as all these communications I have considered confidential. I am very glad to hear from Mr. W.K. McLean, that your health is established, and trust, Sir, that it will remain so. A large batch of records, newspapers and some private letters go by the Luna. The Governor sent to Ministers to borrow files of the Melbourne papers to Mr. Vogel's Secretary sent up to get yours which appear to be the only ones received.
