Ohinemuri June 24/70. My dear Wilson, I arrived here on Monday and found that John Thorpe was over at Waihi. He came back yesterday. The Ngatikoe are in a terrible state of funk at matters in general. Te Hira is away up at Okarua a settlement 6 miles above the Wairere passage on the Waihou. His object is to collect all the Ngatuaukawa and Ngatiporou people he can get to come down and take possession of Owharoa and Waihi. He also intends to build a Pah at Waihi beyond which no one is to venture either way. Wihiri whi and Hone Mataia go down to-day to Auckland to see Dr. Pollen and try and get some guns. I told them to see you also. I think under the circumstances the Govt. might give a few stand to be left in charge of Thorpe in case matters grow worse. Edward Wood has sold Andrews up and let the house to some Jews. Mary Kuru heard of it and immediately went over with her army of Amazons, told Andrews he might go if he liked but that she would not allow any one else to come up. Wood offered her a bottle of brandy which ahe at first refused but finally swallowed. Te Hira is also going to build a Pah at Tapu-Ariki the hill to the entrance of the Gorge this side so as to stop the Kahakaha passage. All this does not look promising but possibly may all terminate in ''bounce''. The Ngatikoe fellows are anxious for Maananui to be sued ivilly but not criminally. Yours very truly, (Sidg.) R.C. Mainwaring.
