Raglan June 12th. 1873. My dear Sir, Herewith I forward a letter from Hone te One referring to a Pamui of Tawhiao's, which has been received by Kawhia Hau Haus. Hone asks that it be published. Now that Hetaraka is dead, I would respectfully suggest that Wetini Mahikai be appointed an assessor at £20 per annum. He appears to be a very straightforward fellow, and spoke very determinedly at the Meeting, as you will see from my Report. His appointment would also meet with the approval of the rest of the Assessors in this District. If you remember, they spoke to you about this when you were at Ngaruawahia. The excitement with respect to the late murder appears to be subsiding, and I think the policy which has been pursued, must, in the long run, prove beneficial, and be the means of shewing the King Party that though the Government are forbearing, yet they are determined. I should therefore not be surprised to find that this notice of Tawhiao's has emanated purely through your action. I have heard many natives praising the steps which have been taken by you. My inclination is to continue visiting Ngatihana, but I should like to hear from you before I visit them again. I believe at the present time many of the Wharepapa people await Te Kuiti. Parekutu is reported to have threatened to kill Hote. I do not believe it. If he has, I do not give much for his life if he attempted such a thing. Everything in Native matters very quiet here. Ngatihana have paid £26 odd on account of their reaping machine. A balance of £9 is still due, which I hope will be paid in September next. Many natives in all parts suffering from severe cold. They all seem to get over them. The Europeans also have been visited by the same complaint. The greatest scoundrel amongst Parukutu's gang is Tuwhakahinga. He is a most treacherous fellow. Parakutu gained his name from a wag in consequence of his blocking up the road, with the object of keeping Hau Haus from visiting our settlements, thus compelling them to go dirty to such an extent that they became infected with vermin.
