8 April 1858. My dear McLean, I have just time to tell you that the Kate Kearney arrived last night from Auckland with 45 rank and file of the 65th. Regt. under --- Higgins, Capt. King R.A., and 5 men, rockets etc. and 2 guns. The plan of the Governor is to remove Ihaia and his tribe to the Chathams if or to leave them to their fate (which is not so bad as it was since the Wanganuis arrived) and if they agree to put down any opposition from the Taua by force. R. Brown (who very incautiously visits the scene) returned from Waitara last night and reports that the Wanganuis have opened the road for Ihaia (to Korihi I presume.) Although they only number some 30 or 40 they completely embarrass the taua, being always in their rear and will on open country beyond. In great haste Yours truly, W. Halse. I have been very ill of quinsy. Henry and Parris left for Waitara at some dreadful hour in the night and have not returned. I presume they are attempting to carry out the Governor's proposal, but why banish Ihaia and let the real villains escape? Kate Kearney nearly lost in crossing Manukao bar. Shipped a sea which filled the deck, washed over 5 people, who were recovered except one poor soldier. 1 sailor killed on deck. Vessel saved by Captain who seized helm and dashed her throught.
