Wanganui, July 25th, 1850. My Dear Mr. Maclean, I returned from a very satisfactory journey to the Ihupuku yesterday, Mamaku and Pehi were there the former formally made peace with the Ngatiruanui at my request he went with me to the encampment of Te Rei Hanatana, when some interesting speeches were made on both sides and at their conclusion Te Rei marched up in state and rubbed noses with the other about 2000 were present asd as we had very fine weather all were very comfortable the service being in the open air. I feared when you left for Wellington that your stay would be longer than you stipulated, but I cannot suppose it is solely on account of the natives. I shall address this to you at Mr. Strangs where I have a shrewd guess it will find you heri ano, but I recommend you to hasten yr. return the natives are very impatient and regard this prolonging of the payment beyond the appointed time as a breach of promise and as the character of our Govt. is at stake we ought to be most particular on such points lest we shd. lower their estimation of our ways and you too do not escape. I just give you a hint. I had numerous applications for paper to write to you but I send the applicants away saying most probably you are on yr. way back my sermon has arrived but I am extremely dissatisfied with the way it has been printed, there are also many blunders in it of the printer but such as it is I send you a half doz. copies of which I beg your acceptance. I have been thinking of purchasing about 3 or 4 scrip now land is so low one for each of my children. I hear Brandon has some to sell very cheap will you ask about it. I hear they may be obtained at 4s or 30£s per scrip. As I consider you in the light of a trustee for my children I must get you to be so kind to see about it. I have got Mr. Telford here and he says that a Major Rutherford has commissioned him to buy land for him at Wanganui therefore you might just ascertain on what terms 6 scrips might be obtained. A man named Blyth a carpenter has purchased the piece of land Mawai gave up. As that is the nearest to my abode I wish I could prevail upon him to let me have it or at least a portion on reasonable terms, if you can find time just ask. Mrs. Taylor sends her kind regards and hopes to see you under her roof very soon all unite and believe me my Dr. Mr. Maclean very sincerely yrs. Richd. Taylor. B. Maclean, Esqre.
