Report from 15th. to 28th. of Feby. 1852. Feb. 15 Sunday parade at ten oclock. 16 D. Bishop v. I. Bovey, case, setting a dog on a cow - fined 1/- with costs. Posted usual report and Police Abstracts to you by this days overland mail to Wellington. 17 The brigantine "Jeune Lucie", 16 days from Newcastle, with sheep for Mr. Richardson. The ship "Fatima", 521 tons, Sproul, 7 days from Wellington with 15 passengers for this place. Mr. Merrett returned from the coast. 18 The schooner "Lucy James", Joyce, 9 days from Wellington with 1 passenger for this and 4 for Auckland - sundries. The Fatima having discharged 40 tons of goods including luggage sailed for Sydney - passenger Mr. Ibbotson (on his return to England), Mr. Heap, Mr. Vernon. The Lucy James sailed for Manukao, additional passengers Master Gibson and Hanson Turton. 19 Court Day. C. Dary v. Inch - adjourned. The Jeune Lucie sailed for Sydney, passenger Mr. Adams. The schooner "Cicely", Liddell, 14 days from Auckland, landed a mail and sailed for Canterbury - passenger Mr. Richard Brown of that settlement. Overland Mail from Auckland, received two Gazettes for you. Feb. 20 Overland Mail from Wellington. 21 General muster. Attended at Police Office. T. Wilson v. Perry - cattle at large in the Town, fined 1/- with costs. Private Dunn returned from Whanganui, absent 13 days. 22 Sunday Parade. Police on duty in Town during Divine service. 23 Te Ahoaho of Waiwakaiho complained of having been cursed by Mr. Merrett, a similar complaint was made by Tame Watene of Puketapu. A Mokau native named Te Kawau came to Barracks and brough six cloth caps and one waistecoat, being articles stolen by a party of Mokau Natives from Mr. Homeyer on Saturday last. Mr. Smart told me a cow of his had been so severely wounded in the fore leg by some natives at Waiwakaiho that it was necessary to kill her immediately. I went to Captain King and reported the case of cattle wounding. 24 Resident Magistrate came into Town and sent for Hone Ropiha, the Native Assessor. By direction of Resident Magistrate, I returned the caps and waistecoat to Mr. Homeyer. Te Kawau received 5/-. Overland Mail left for Auckland. S. Crawly found drunk and disorderly and locked up. 25 Heale v. Crawly, fined 5/- with costs - locked up. I went to Hone Ropiha in the case of cattle wounding - it was arranged that a meeting should take place at his house tomorrow evening. 26 Richardson v. Farey - debt, defendant to pay £10 now and remaining £10 in ten months. Went to Waiwakaiho and met the following natives: Te Ropiha Ko Ropata Ko Heta Ko Mataora Ko Patoromu Ko Anaru Ko Aperahama Ko Rapana Ko Haimona A lengthened inquiry was made but nothing elicited that would in any way sustain a charge against them. b. 27 Force engaged cleaning arms at Barracks. Wrote a letter to Resident Magistrate reporting result of inquiry into the case of cattle wounding. 28 I attended at Police Office. A native named Epiha complained to Resident Magistrate of having been cursed by Mr. Merrett. Resident Magistrate sent for Mr. Merrett and ordered him to quit this district by 10 oclock on Monday morning next - if see after that time two policemen would remove him. Mr. Morgan came to Barracks and told me Hopa of Hauranga had taken a pick and bullock chain from him as payment for a little fencing accidentally burnt in clearing fern land at Tataraimaka. The fencing was placed on Mr. Morgan's land by the above native without permission and with a knowledge that the fern would shortly be fired.
