Napier June 21st. 1872. My dear Mr. Maclean, I had some conversation with you on board the "Luna" about the plans prepared by Mr. Clayton for Te Aute school. In his letter to me, he seems to have understood from you, that he was not to make a charge for commission, but he speaks of having incurred an expenditure of £25, which he did under the impression that the work was a private one, and he asks me to reimburse to him this sum. He seems to have forgotten, that on sending the plans, he required from Mr. Holt, the builder, a cheque for £35, which was duly sent, and is added by Holt to the sum which I have to pay. This, if understood rightly, I ought not to have paid; and yet he asks for £25 more. I complain of Mr. Clayton, because whereas for my own home I paid to Mr. Keele, the Auckland architect, at the rate of 2 1/2 per cent upon the contract, Mr. Clayton has received from Holt 2 1/2 per cent commission, and then proceeds to make an additional charge of £5 per cent, thus making a total of £7 1/2, a charge which I am told us altogether unusual. I enclose to you Mr. Clayton's letter, trusting that when you return to Wellington, you will place this matter in its right position. I remain Most faithfully Yours (Signed) W. Waiapu. To:- The Honourable Donald McLean.
