Wanganui December 9th, 1871 My dear Mr. McLean, I enclose you as you wished an account of my brothers trip for your information. The natives were much pleased with his visit and he intends going up again shortly. I received your telegram yesterday, I am sure I have no wish to go in for unnecessary expense, and would prefer an office in the Court House as far as I am concerned but the fact is, I have to see the natives in Hotels, they get drinking, time is wasted and business is delayed and this annoys me. I believe Major Edwards has telegraphed to you. The Native Lands Court has been investigating more into the title of the 46000 acre block Aperahama Tipae is the chief owner as I have known for months past. I ride to Pikopiko tomorrow and will report on my return. I was extremely sorry to here of your poor brothers accident and death. Permit me to offer you my sincere sympathy on the loss you have sustained. Believe me, Yours very truly, Thos. McDonnell The Hon. Defence Minister
