Duplicate Auckland 12th Jany., 1858 My dear McLean, The Governor started on Wednesday the 6th for the Bay and had a plesant passage of 26 hours. He is accompanied by Mr.Whitaker and Mr.Smith and John White. They appear to be engaged in koreros about the site of proposed new Town. The Governor had some idea of visiting Ahuriri in the Frigate afrer his return from the Bay looking at the present posture of affairs there, do you think such a visit expedient? If possible answer this by return of post. I have arranged a credit for you at Wellington for £ 5,000 which can, if you are likely to need it, be increased. But the English October mail is not in yet, and pending its arrival, I have not wished to draw a larger sum. Fenton is returned to the Waikato under injunction to do as little as possible in the Runanga line. I have had to start Drummond Hay to the Piako with a flea in his ear. Johnson is up here for a few days. He is making a plan of the Wanganie blocks. I have no time for more news Yours very truly, C.W.RICHMOND D.McLean Esq.
