Letter from W.N. Searancke to Donald McLean Esq. dated 28th. February 1857. . Awhitu 28th. February 1857. D. Maclean Esq. etc., etc., Auckland. Dear Sir, After seeing te Katipa and others, I considered, from the scattered manner in which the different purchases (from their account) had been made, it would be best to at once make a correct survey of the outer boundaries to Manukau and West Coast. This I shall complete next week, when I shall be prepared to accompany Katipa and others round the boundaries of the various purchases. I observe that the Ngatitiata tribe do not allow of Wetere's claim here, or right to sell. I think Wetere should be made aware of this; also Taratiki-tiki's sale of land here to Mr. Ligar (?) They repudiate his claim, or right of claim to land here altogether. As Taratikitiki is, I believe, resident at Orakei, you might have an opportunity of seeing him. I tried in vain to see Mr. Ligar's book of Purchases (Land), when in Auckland, to get Memorandums of the land purchased by the late Surveyor General. I think about the 10th. (Tuesday week) I shall be able to get a rough plan of the ground finished, and the natives all mustered to show the boundaries of the different Blocks. If you think it advisable to see the Katipa and Tribe, yourself, before we start, at Waiuku, I think about Tuesday the 10th. will be the best day. But should you not be able to make it convenient, or not think it advisable, you may rely upon my doing my best with them; and in that case I should take the first opportunity, after the different Blocks have been pointed out to me, to see you in Auckland. I am, dear Sir, very faithfully yours, (Signed) Will. N. Searancke. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
