Waiapu December 9th. 1868. My dear McLean, We have just received the good news from Turanga which has filled all here with delight. I trust your men will be able to follow them up and exterminate the ruffians. The St. Kilda was obliged to pass on to Hick's Bay owing to Southerly weather but as soon as she hoisted her colour I sent off a messenger to ascertain her mission. I got a note by return from Capt. Cellum telling me that he had some flour on board which he would land on his return for Morgan and others. On her arrival here I shall officially acknowledge the receipt of it. They all desire that I should receive it and see it fairly distributed as on former occasions of its being sent Mohi and Co. got hold of it and few of those for whom it was intended ever saw anything of it. Mohi is anxious to pay you a visit at Napier, ostensibly on business with the Bishop. He has been in an awful funk since he first heard of the Turanga Massacre. He well knows that his chance would be a poor one if ever the Hau Haus came here. He was of all the most unmerciful to those of them that you allowed to remain here. He made slaves of them and he is now filled with dread that a day of retribution may come. Morgan and he came over this morning on receipt of the good news and breakfasted. Mohi had brightened up considerably. There is an impression on the minds of many of them here that any danger menacing this part of the Coast will be from the north. It is possible but as yet we have had no intimation of any movements. If anything does threaten I hope you will not forget us as the best men are all with your force at the front and even 25 or 50 good men would inspire great confidence in case of danger. Yours ever, J.H. Campbell. What about the 15 Rifles I wrote you abt. Am I to hold them meanwhile. Lord Henry bothers me for them. I have told him I hold them pending instructions from those I got them from.
