New Plymouth July 6th. 1850. Sir, I beg to forward the Police Report for the fortnight ending this day:- Parade at 10 O'clock. Medland in charge of the prisoner Rops, at work on the public roads. Martin, of Moturoa, brought his horse to Police Barracks, to shew a gun shot wound in the off side, caused by small shot. The wounded side had been much swollen, and the cause of the injury was not discovered until yesterday. I posted a letter to you, with enclosures, by this day's Overland Mail to Wellington. W.S. King called, and explained why he did not answer my note relative to his dispute with Erewina. Witana came to Barracks in the evening, and entered into a verbal agreement with James Sole, to break in a steer during his absence in the South, and have the use of the same to the end of the current year. Stewart on leave for the day. He returned at 2 p.m. and remained in charge of Barracks. I went to Captain Bulkely's section with A. Kassel, the tenant, in dispute with Opataia, one of the town Pah natives. On enquiry, I found blame attached to both parties, particularly to the native, who had neglected to fence his run against Kassel's cattle, thereby leaving a trap which attracted the cattle, and occasioned the dispute. The natives promised to clear off next month, and Kassel was satisfied. W.S. King and Erewina came to Barracks. After a long discussion, the matter in dispute was arranged by King paying £3 to the native. Tamati Waka called about the recent meeting at Waitara. Post Office closed, and the duties carried on at Government House. Johnson on leave for the day. Tane Watene, a Puketapu native, came to Barracks, and told me he had found Mr. Davies in the Henui river near the beach. After reporting to Dr. Wilson, who was in town, I went with the informant, and one of the Police to the spot, and saw deceased on the sand bank, fully dressed, with the exception of his cap. From his incarcerated and putrified state, the opinion is that he must have been dead for some time. The body was removed to the dead house at the Colonial Hospital. An enquiry was made by Captain King and Captain Campbell at the Hospital. Found drowned, having wandered away in a state of lunacy. Police paid from 28th. March to 26th. of June inclusively, by the Sub-Treasurer. Honi Ropiha gave me £3 for Mr. Smart. The late Mr. Davies buried. By Captain King's direction, I went with Honi Ropiha, to Captain Bulkely's section, to see the natives there, and warn them off immediately, I found the natives preparing to leave, and Kassel was satisfied. A party of Ngatiruanui natives met at Mr. Samuel Oliver's, about the erection of a flour Mill, by him, at Puketapu, or some other eligible spot. Wheat was to be the mode of payment, if they came to terms with Mr. Oliver. The barque "Poietiers", 750 tons, Seal, from Brighton direct, with passengers and goods, for this, and other settlements. She is 124 days out. The Pilot boarded, and stood to sea; wind North West. I paid Tane Watene the reward of £5. Medland engaged with Mr. Standish Johnson, in charge of Rops. Heale and Stewart present at muster. Absent - Newsham, Rawiri, and Honi Ropiha. The latter was not well. Two natives, Tare and Toroa came to Barracks, and complained of not being paid by Joseph Hawke, for work done on his section. On inquiry it was found that the work was not finished, and they were accordingly recommended, to return and complete it, as agreed upon. Overland Mail from Auckland. Died - Emera, a Chief of Ngamotu. Parade at 10 o'clock. The "Poietiers" returned and anchored. Capt. Heale and Mr. Coward, the surgeon of the ship, landed with several of the passengers. Overland Mail from Wellington. I received a packet from you, containing letters for Dr. Wilson, Capt. Campbell, Mr. Turton, and others. Medland and Heale engaged by Mr. Leech. Stewart in charge of the prisoner, Rops. Johnson on duty in town. I received from Ihaia 7/- payment of Raniera's account. Delivered your Salary and Forage Abstracts to Captain King. I paid Mr. Smart £3 received from Honi Ropiha on 27th. ultimo. Emera buried at Moturoa. Taranaki Hotel opened. Medland engaged with. Mr. Standish. Heale in charge of the Bonded Store. Medland and Heale the same as yesterday. Johnson on the aick list. Honi Ropiha came to Barracks, and told me he intended to see Wiremu te Ha at an early opportunity. Court to-day. Cases settled out of Court. Heale engaged the same as yesterday. Received two Summonses aganist D. Bishop, and Minarapa. Stewart left for Wareatea, and served Minarapa with copy of Summons. Rops discharged. Heale the same as yesterday. 10 a.m. Stewart v. Bishop; assault. Verdict for Plaintiff; damages 6d. with costs. Honi Ropiha left for Omata. Medland engaged at Police Office. Heale the same as yesterday. Johnson sick. Absent from muster - Newsham and Rawiri. The latter came to Barracks at noon, and dictated enclosed letter to you. Tamati Waka called at Barracks. Honi Ropiha returned from Omata. He had not seen Wiremu te Ha; and dictated the letter which I have enclosed. Lately the Police in town have alternately had charge of Rops during the hours of work, and during the press of business, owing to the presence of an English ship. Heale had been in regular attendance at the Bonded Store. Medland's services have also been required in the Post and Police Office.
