Tongoio March 18th. 1864. Dear Sir, I wish to inform you of the proceedings of a late meeting of the natives at this place a few days back Paul has come back from Waikato and is trying to raise forces here to go back with him. There is a report that he is going to fetch two hundred and fifty or sixty natives with him to attack Napier and the outsettlements now this report is a secret communication from him to the Tailor this was told my wife by a woman that overheared them that they intend to attack the outsettlements the Tailor told Paul that it was best to warn the whites and send them out of the way Paul said no let them all fare alike the queens natives and whites slaughter away and spare none. The Tailor has gone to Mohako to see if he can muster any forces and to take young Spooners family out of the way, there was a native yesterday gave me warning that if any of the natives came to me and tryed to make a row to have nothing to say to them for it might be the worse for me there is one thing evident here there is something on the board the native are makeing balls serving out powder and makeing catriges. I believe the Tailor intends to come to town before he goes to se your Honor he says that he is going to try to stop the natives from comeing be that as it may he intends to go. I wish that you would not mantion my name in any way as I am living on native land it might be the worse for me. I have the honor to remain your humble servant, Wm. H. Thompson.
