"Wairoa" Feby. 21st 67 Dear Sir, The absence of your Honor from Napier is sufficient apology for my not having answered your note of Decr. 18th ult. at an earlier date. in reference to the subject matter of which I may reply in the first case viz. the Volunteer Movement here, that I am quite prepared to resign an appointment which I never sought, and have notified already to Mr. Richardson my willingness to retire from the 'Ensigncy'. Respecting the second portion I have already seen Mr. Locke here at the Wairoa, and regret to say with results but little satisfactory to me. Whilst expressing his willingness to furnish employment he regrets his inability to do so until I obtain a 'License' adding his impression that the Govt. wish to avade granting one in my Favor on account of the circumstances attending the termination of my temporary connection with the Govt. as Interpreter to the former R. M. in this district - and finally urged upon me the desirability of trying my fortunes elsewhere - thanking him for his candour and admitting the gravity of his reasons, I may yet plead, without seeking to escape the consequences of my undoubted misconduct, that the heavy punishment that has fallen on my shoulders is or should be a set off against a Judgment that would debar me from the means of finding a livelyhood for my family. Without further allusion to a subject deeply painful to myself and I am sure regretted on my account by you, I will briefly state the prospects before me, which I only wait your sanction to follow out - Mr. Burton has offered to give me the benefit of three or four months with him to fulfill the suggestions contained in the letter addressed to me by the Judge of the Land Court. I am willing to accept the term of probation and to afford Mr. Burton what assistance I can as some return for his kindness. At the end of that time Mr. Webber may give me his aid to procure the License. At the same time I will not do even this unless I know if be approved by yourself, for whatever my faults are and have been, I am not selfish enough to seek to benefit by Burton's kindness at the expence of his interests. With the assurance of my gratitude to yourself, for kindliness under all circumstances I beg to remain Dear Sir Your most obedient Servt. George B. Worgan
