Wellington 21st July 1858 My dear Sir Pardon my again adverting to the subject of my "karere" I wish merely to say that any assistance the Gen. Government may be disposed to bestow will, I trust, date from the commencement of the years. At the time of your visit (February, if I mistake not) we increased our power in the Printing dept. because of the prospect of such assistance. Our little city is all commotion. Election follows election in quick succession; party spirit rages wilder and wilder, predicting some stoy times ahead. What the end will be, who can predict? I think we may rest pretty certain that fully six months must elapse ere peace and tranquillity can be restored. Our Maori friends of the neighbourhood are as usual peaceable and quiet. They suffered seriously, I regret to say, in their cultivations during the late Flood. There is no inclination to join the belligerents of Taranaki.
