Copy. Mokau 6th. November 1845. Dear Sir, The bearers, Nga Ruru ma, are going with Hol land, the carpenter; and having no pikau to bring back, offered their services to me, if I had anything to do for them. Could I trouble you to purchase for us 2 or 3 pikaus flour, of 40 Ibs. each, 1 Ib. pepper, and half pound earraway seeds; and send it by the lads. I enclose one pound note. Have just returned from Kawhia; enclose letters from Mr. Whiteley. Please to forward Messrs. Webster and Turton's. Mr. W. is off to Wakatumutumu, Wanganui, Port Nicholson; and will return by the Coast. I have received letters from Mr. Perry, and I also enclose them for your perusal; and you can return by the boys. The "Hydras" (?) as you have probably been informed, is seized. I have seen Mr. Charlton of Kawhia, about her. He showed me a letter from Mr. Perry, in which he said he had despatched a vessel to Manukau, with a person on board, who would take charge of the "Hydras", and cause the crew to be imprisoned. Please let me have your thoughts of this affair. I wrote you after my return from your quarter. Have you received it? Another favour I beg of you is to get me a piece of iron made for a cross-cut-saw, according to pattern, 2 rivets to put it on here. Knowing your willingness to serve us on former occasions, I hope you will pardon me being so very troublesome this time. The three bags will serve for the flour. If the money be not right, we can settle that when I see you. Mr. Turton is so far out of the way that the lads do not like to go there. With Mrs. S's respects, I remain, dear Sir, Yours very truly (Signed) C.H. Schnackenberg. P.S. would you be so kind as to purchase us also about a dozen yards calico of 2 yds. width. Mr. Dawson, I understand, sells it at ½ per yd. For that purpose I enclose another pound note. Suppose we had 100 Ibs flour, which would be only 20 Ibs. for the 3rd. pikau, to which the calico might be added. (Signed) C.H.S To:- D. McLean Esq. Protector of Aboriginies. New Plymouth.
