Taranaki 9 December, 1854 My dear Sir, On Monday last, Rogan left for Mokau, and your packet came to hand the following day. Agreeably to your wish all the enclosures for this Province were at once delivered and those for the Mokau district, including your letter of the 27 November, have been posted under cover to Rogan. Ihaia has thrown up a Pa near his house. It is rumoured that a large party of Ngatiruanui Natives may be shortly expected at the Hamaku, by the inland path, to revenge the death of Rimene. I do not however anticipate any thing serious from their visit, seeing that Ihaia has trampled upon the white man's law and become one of the large majority by which this Province is surrounded. The sequel of the growing lawlessness of our natives, which is attributed to the death of poor old Rawiri, is another and far graver matter for consideration and will require the utmost skill to overcome. Faithfully yours H. Halse
