Letter from Lieut. Governor Eyre, to Donald McLean Esq. dated 15th. March 1853. Wellington 15th. March 1853. My dear Sir, I have just received your kind note of this morning, written to take leave of Mrs. 3yre and myself, ere you set out on a journey overland to Auckland. I regret you are unable to call, on your way out of town, as we should have been glad to have had the opportunity of seeing you once again, and of saying good-bye in person; especially as there is no probability of our being still at Wellington when you return. But as this cannot now be, let me thus beg you to accept my grateful testimony to the zeal and ability with which you served the Government of New Munster, during the period I administered it; as well as my sincere wishes for your welfare and prosperity, in which Mrs. Eyre desires most cordially to unite. Many thanks for the beautiful drawing of the Roto Mahana Lakes, which you so kindly sent. It is a spot I often desired to visit, without being able to do so; and the drawing will also remind me that I once made a journey up the country in your company, with the intention of reaching the scene which it depicts; but which, from circumstances, I was unable to carry out. As an illustration of the romantic scenery of New Zealand, a more interesting or attractive subject could scarcely be found; and I have no doubt it will obtain general admiration wherever shewn. Believe me, my dear Sir, very faithfully yours (Signed) G. Eyre. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
