Madden - cargo 5 kegs butter 103 tons barley 171/2 tons flour 1 box eggs 8001bs. sharps 21/4 tons bran, maize 350 bushels. 27 Resident Magistrate still indisposed. Posted usual report, native correspondence, Gazettes, and Abstracts for your signature. Overland Mail left for Wellington. Wiremu te Rangi came to Barracks, he declined entering into a conversation about his Reserve at Waiwakaiho in the absence of Matena who was altogether opposed to parting with it. Lucy James sailed for Kawhia. 28 Hakopa left for Puke tapu, returned in the evening and brought me a letter from Ngatiruanui Chiefs to residents opposed to the sale of land, proposing to cut down the new flag staff in this settlement. Overland mail left for Auckland. 29 John Dunn - late 65th. Regt. - sworn in as a Constable by Resident Magistrate in place of John Medland discharged. 30 Dr. Wilson J.P. and Mr. Halse J.P. sat in the police Court. Young v. Dalby - case, assault, dismissed. 31 Police engaged cleaning arms at Barracks. Overland mail from Wellington. 1 General muster and drill - Rawiri Waiaua, Tahana and Tamati Waka came to Barracks and wrote a letter to Ngatiruanui Chiefs relative to their letter of 20th. ulto. 2 Force met on Parade. 3 Police engaged collecting Census Returns. Te Ngahuru came to Barracks, I suggested to him that he might get the consent of the natives interested to a right of road to the Tabaramaka Block. 5 Tataraimaka Block, subject to a 150 acre reserve for Mr. Cutfield, offered by Commissioner of Crown Lands to holders of Original Land Orders. One section only consisting of 50 acres was selected. 6 Court Day. Mr. Wicksteed J.P. and Dr. Wilson J. P. sat. Gover (Carrington Agent) v. Joll - case, damages for occupying and trespassing on two Town sections - judgment for plaintiff damages 5/- with costs. W. Gray v. Wilkinson, debt, judgment for plaintiff. 7 Hakopa left for Waitara to inquire after a native who brought three letters from the North for Europeans and refused to give them up unless 5/- were paid to him. R. Gollop, one of the three to whom the letters were addressed, could give no information about the native who called at his house, con- sequently Hakopa failed to discover the native. 8 General muster and drill. Hone Ropiha gave me two letters addressed to Hori Kingi and Tamati Hone. Overland Mail from Auckland with "Cashmere's letters - received 2 gazettes for you. The "Cashmere" had arrived there with upwards of 100 passengers 60 of whom were reported for this place. A meeting held at "Seven Stars" to consider the Governor in Chief's reply to resolutions adopted at a public meeting on 4th. ultimo against a Charter Incorporating New Plymouth. A memorial was prepared embracing the spirit of the former resolutions, and is now lying in Town for signature. The settlers who were outvoted at the previous meeting did not attend.
