Napier Aug. 18/71 Dear Sir, In continuation of my last with Enclosures - I send you an account of a little episode that occurred on Tuesday last. The case comes off today for trial, Maddock having sued Lord for his whip and Lord summonsed Maddock for an assault. I will tell you further if the Nevada does not go off too soon. Just heard of arrival of Mr. Vogel - case ended Maddock fined 10/- and Lord to pay 5/- or give up the Whip - fines paid. The telegraph tells you all the news and I know Mr. Ormond is a good correspondent. Everyone here is looking out for your having a fight with Stafford Hall but do not think much of Gillies. It is supposed by a good many that he has however a goodly no of the Auckland Members with him more than is generally credited. I hope you will be able to get on this Session without much trouble although I know you like a fight. I am stopped again. I will write you a long letter by Rangatira in about a week. I have had a hard weeks work both at office and at home up 3 nights no rest. Mrs. F. and child are very unwell. With every hope of your success, I have the hr. to be Sir, Your most obt. svt. Geo Thos. Fannin. The Hon. Donald McLean Esq., Wellington.
