Wallingford May 26th/64 My dear McLean, I conclude you will be back by today's steamer. I shall wait until I hear you are back and then I propose coming down for a day or two to have a chat about things in general. As far as I can judge thene is no cause for alarm on account of our resident natives the way in which most of them are employed and the lack of the strong interest they took a few months time in news of the war are to me complete evidence of the quiet disposition. I judge also fronwhat passes generally around me. For instance I have had two applications just now for sheep to purchase from the two principal chief about here I said I did not want to sell until after shearing. I have now sold some sheep to them on their paying me part of the price of the sheep now in Cash. The remainder payable out of my rent when due. The sheep not deliverable until they are shorn at the next coming shearing. To my mind I could not obtain what would be more satisfactory evidence of the peaceable intentions of my Maori neighbours. I had a letter from my brother a day or two since he was anxious to get the duty of Medical attendant upon the Military settlers will you kindly help him to get it - he wants it in addition to his present employment as Medical officer to the Defence Corps - As I shall see you so soon I need not write more. Always Sincerely yours, J. D. Ormond.
