Letter from J. Rogan, to Donald McLean, dated 2nd. December 1854. New Plymouth 2nd. December 1854. My dear Sir, I have at last given up as hopeless, for the present, the completion of the Hua and Waiwakaiho surveys, owing to the want of native labour. I have made preparation to leave for Mokau to finish the survey of the land already offered; which will occupy probably a month or more; when I shall return again; and by that time I trust the natives here will have settled their differences. The Superintendent and Halse fancy I should remain until the work here is finished; but as the natives themselves give me no hope of their assistance, until after the Wellington people come, I shall not be doing wrong by forwarding Mokau a little, without prejudice to my work here. Ihaia, of the Waitara, shot a young man from Onairo the other day, who was accused of adultery with his wife. A taua was got up by W. Kingi, so therefore the matter passed away very quietly. I shall be careful to give you an early account of my proceedings at Mokau. I remain, my dear Sir, very truly yours, (Signed) John Rogan. To:- Donald McLean.
