. Maketu 2nd. July 1870. My dear Mr. McLean, I have very little news to tell you, except everything is going on alright in this part. The Natives are still working at the road. Mr. C.C. Clarke has been inland to see the Natives about making the road from Ohinemutu to Tauranga. Capt. Mair and Mr. Gill have also been inland to pay the Arawas and other Natives. Capt. Turner is inland now, laying out the road from Ohinemutu to Tauranga. The Telegraph Department is getting on slowly - no poles laid out here yet - a cutter got on the Maketu bar this morning with poles. You have no doubt heard by this time that the Orderly Room at Tauranga has been burnt to the ground. My pack horses have not been paid from March upwards. When may I have some money? Capt, Mair leaves Kaitiriria tomorrow or next day for Ruatuhuna and elsewhere. I was a fortnight without stores at this port but I have some now. No news about Te Kooti. Major Mair R.M. is at Opotiki and Mr. G.C. Clarke has gone to Auckland. Trusting that you are quite well. I remain Yours ever sincerely Herbert F. Way.
