Monday morning 3rd March [1873] Mon chere frere As there is a likelihood of the 'Luna' returning we thought it best that Douglas should take a run. He will be much the better of it and keep him out of all the excitement that goes on here at present. He has been pretty close at the office and certain he requires change. He must not stay long in Auckland as it is merely for sake of the sail there & back that he goes. I am delighted Mr Fox is again in office and trust he will remain. He called at the Hart's. Told them it was marvellous the good you had done on the west coast. He is most enthusiastic about it and in fact is utterly ashamed at how thoroughly you have mastered the difficulty. I see it is hot in Auckland but trust you are not in any way exposed to it. Jessie is here with me for a few days. Poor thing. I like her. She goes home by the 'Dakotah'.
