Auckland August 12th. 1869. My dear McLean, The ''Ahuriri'', which ought to have sailed yesterday, was delayed by stress of weather, in the Manukau, until this morning. Since my Official letter was posted yesterday, I received from Moule, a telegram, of which I enclose a copy. Searancke had not reported to me what the letter from Tamati was about. I have sent him (Searancke) a message this morning on the subject. I expect it has reference to the Maoris who were taken with the arms and ammunition, at Ngaruawahia. We succeeded in finding the European who sold the guns, etc., etc., and both he and the natives have been committed for trial at the next Supreme Court, which will be held on the 1st. prox., I think. The ''Sturt'' came in yesterday. She must be put on shore to get her bottom cleaned, and then will go to Wellington, via Tauranga. You will see that Harrington still keeps 25 Militia men on pay at the Gate Pah. He ought not, I think, to be allowed to do that; and I will write to him privately, to that effect. There are quite enough Armed Constabulary at Tauranga to protect it, without the further expense of a very useless and demoralised lot of ex-Waikatos, as Militia. There will be a Mail to-morrow, by the East Coast. I am, yours very truly, (Signed) Daniel Pollen. P.S. I enclose private note received from Clarke yesterday. (Signed) D.P.
