Brooklands October 7th. 1850. Dear Mac Lean, I cannot allow your man to leave without writing a few hasty lines. Settlers are tumbling in fast, but there being no land for them, (except Trust) I apprehend many will leave for some other place. A great increase by the next ship is expected. How are they to be located? That is the question. To my thinking it will not be here. yet how shameful, with hundreds of thousands of acres of waste land about us, not to be able to locate a few individuals. The people are very clamorous for the Bell Block, which I think now may be given up, even at a risk; for the want of land at this time is an evil of no small importance. Lay has been written to, to give up for selection, our Cattle Run; which of course he will do, since we, I expect, hold no document sufficiently strong to prevent his taking such a course; and honour and integrity being words unknown, or at least not recognised by the New Zealand Company. We must therefore get rid of our cattle at a considerable loss, say £500 or £600; or send them down to Rangitikei on thirds. By the way, now let me request you to make some inquiries about Timor ponies. I should like to introduce them here; and would like to get 2 or 3 mares and a stallion. Our friend at Hauranga, Nopira, not being able to talk me out of 5 or 6 shillings, coolly set fire to the fern; and I should have had the place burnt down had not I seen it in time to get it put out. Who require a Protector? The natives or the Europeans? Moha Moha is much improved since you saw it. When shall you be back? The Captain is calling for my letter; therefore believe me to remain, Yours truly and faithfully (Signed) G. Cutfield. To:- Donald Mac Lean Esq. Wellington
