Auckland Club 17th. August 1870 Dear Sir, I regret extremely to occupy your time which is so precious just now, and will therefore say but a few words, reserving the details of my complaint to some future time and place. I am informed accidentally, but I believe correctly, that Mr. William Mair, of Opotiki, has made some official communication to the Government respecting me; which, , might prejudice my reputation. I have not seen such report, nor do I know its contents, and I can only guess its nature from certain calumnies that he, and some other officials in the Bay of Plenty, have graiuitously gone out of their way to circulate against me. This has been done on several occasions since September 1869. In fact, I have patiently endured much provocation many months, partly in the hope that time would soften animosity of Mr. Mair, and such as have spoken falsely against me; and have from time to time obtained insertion in the papers, of paragraphs pointing at me; and partly from a feeling of aversion to a subject so exceedingly distasteful. I find, however, that my forbearance has been miscontrued; and that some course of action is necessary to check an evil that, to me, is becoming quite serious. I enclose a couple of notes received last mail, shewing that I am not the only person aggrieved. There are many. I would ask you, should you consider the document of sufficient importance, to forward Mr. Mair's Report to me for remark, before forming an opinion thereon. I am Yours truly (Signed) J.A. Wilson. To:- The Honble. D. McLean Wellington.
