New Zealand Government House, June 30/70 My dear McLean, It probably wd. be expedient, as you are about again to have recourse to the Money Market in England, if that you should enable me to send home every month, or at longer intervals, a memo. (such as you have generally sent hitherto) simply stating the progress of warlike operations (if any) in certain districts, and the general tranquillity of the Colony. Will you stimulate Mr. Halse about sending me Parakaia's petition with a translation? There were copies of both in the local papers here. If I recollect right, the only important points to contradict are the insinuations that the Col. Govt. has any interest in the Manawatu case, and that the Judges of the Native Lands Court are not independent. The petition bears evident marks of European inspiration, and probably it wd. be well if you were to say so in the Mem. upon it. All the facts of the Manawatu case have frequently been sent home - and I think you need not do more than refer in general terms to former correspondence on the subject. It is, of course, necessary to send home the petition; otherwise we shall be accused of suppressing it; whereas we are quite in different how much is written about the matter. Ever yrs. G. F. Bowen
