Letter from Sir George Grey ton Donald McLean Esq. dated 25th. September 1853. Government House Wellington Monday morning, 25th. September 1853. My dear McLean, I add a few lines to say that if the additional sum of Two thousand pounds, (in addition to the sum of One Thousand I send out to-day), will enable you to pay the first instalment for the purchase of the entire Wairarapa district, you are authorised to go to that amount, - that is, I will retain in addition to what I now send you, the sum of Five thousand pounds at your disposal; Three Thousand pounds for Te Hapuku, and two thousand pounds more for Wairarapa. It is of great consequence that you should let me know, as soon as possible, if you want all this money, as my future private pecuniary arrangements will depend upon this. If it is really necessary for me to go to Hawke's Bay, and you could complete this purchase of the Wairarapa in a few days now, then I could leave Wellington upon next Saturday or Monday, and pass through the Wairarapa quietly; delaying there a few days, and go on from there to Hawke's Bay. In that case I should send the Brig away to Auckland upon Saturday. But I should much prefer going to Auckland myself in the Brig, although I will give way upon this point if by so doing will promote the good of the country. Let me have an answer to this letter as quickly as you can. faithfully yours, (Signed) G. Grey. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
