Tauranga. April 12th. 1872. My dear Mr. McLean, I received your telegram of to-day just too late to reply before you left Napier this afternoon. I have written to Preece to assemble the principal men of Te Urewera, at Whakatane. It is the only convenient place for you to meet them. You never can depend on landing at Matata, on account of the heavy surf which breaks on that beach. I am very sorry that I cannot meet you there. But till noon on Tuesday next, my Magisterial work will not let me move from this. My R.M. work is a bore; and I shall not be satisfied till I am relieved of it. I cannot be away for any length of time. Tuesday is the day for a full meeting of Justices for the District. Ngaiterangi are a little quarrel-some, and require some one close at hand to pour oil on the troubled waters. Hopkins is not back yet; but will be here next Wednesday or Thursday. You may see Te Waru. I have seen him once or twice; and he is anxious to move away from Matata, to some place where he can grow food. He mentioned Ohiwa and Waiotahi (between Ohiwa and Opotiki), but I could not give him any answer. I must admit that the Awa-o-te-Atua or Matata lands (except in prosperous seasons) are very unsatisfactory. You have either sand or swamps. But I do not think it would be advisable to let them go to Ohiwa. Karaitiana has been in the Arawa District. I am afraid doing a world of mischief. I have had a secret letter from one of the Maketu natives, giving a most extraordinary account of what took place at a Meeting held at Maketu. I shall go to Maketu, unless you turn up sooner, directly the J.P. business closes on Tuesday. I have already bespoken horses, in case you can go in to Rotorua. Very faithfully yours, (Signed) W.T. Clamber (?) I have asked Preece to be present and take notes of your meeting with the Urewera, and to record any promises you may make.
