Letter from Lt. Governor Eyre, to Donald McLean. dated 20th. January 1849. Government House Wellington. 20th. January 1849. My dear Sir, Not having had the opportunity of seeing Te Rauparaha on my way back to Wellington, I requested Major Durie, if he saw you, to mention that I wished you to come on to Wellington; as I thought I might then go over with you to Taupo, to see Te Rauparaha. But as I learn he is at Otaki, and will probably remain there some little time, it will perhaps be better for me to join you at Otaki for a day, as soon as I learn that you are arrived there. Will you therefore be good enough to send a messenger in, to let me know when you are at Otaki; and whether my presence there for the purpose of requesting Te Rauparaha to accompany you back to Manawatu and Rangitikei, to use his influence with the --- natives, will be of any service, in forwarding the objects of your mission. For, in the event of your thinking it desirable, I would at once ride out to Otaki, to make any arrangements which might be possible, or to explain any circumstances relative to which information might be required. Yours faithfully (Signed) G. Eyre. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
