Tauranga 6th July 1870 My dear Sir, There is really no native news to report from this District with the exception of the little contained in the enclosed letter from Captain Preece. The road and telegraph works are progressing, though rather slowly in consequence of the continued very bad weather If it is true (as reported in the newspapers) that 130 Uriweras have surrendered to Mr. Hamlin at Waikerimoana, there cannot be very many more to come in. All the Militia were struck off pay on the 1st Inst. A few of the Constabulary only are now employed on the Judea swamp road. You will have heard of the burning down of the District office and store at this place. Fortunately there was very little in the store at the time. In the District office everything was destroyed. I had an immense accumulation of pay sheets and vouchers ready for the payment of Constabulary Militia, Volunteers, Native Contingents etc. and was only waiting for the money to get rid of them; however, all went in the fire - Besides this, in order to keep things going, I paid away over £600 out of my own pocket and lost all the vouchers, but I hope to get fresh vouchers in nearly every case and get over my troubles with a loss of about £20. I have forwarded to Mr. Branigan the proceedings of the Board assembled to enquire into and report on the cause of the fire. Colonel Gorton is expected here tomorrow. Mr. Clarke went to Auckland last week and seemed very much improved in health. Major Mair is at Opotiki. Trusting that you may have a quiet session. I remain my dear Sir, Yours very truly, W. Moule The Hon, D. McLean Native & Defence Minister, WELLINGTON
